History of Mercat 1930

The building that houses the Mercat 1930 Palma Gatronomic Market is steeped in history. It was opened as a hotel in 1910, on the first line, only separated by some rocks from the s'Aigua Dolçe beach, where a freshwater spring flowed into the Mediterranean, hence its name.
Its current appearance was received almost 20 years later, designed by the Mallorcan architect Francesc Roca Simó, who used Art Deco elements that are still striking today and were considered revolutionary at the time.
In the 1950s, the Gran Hotel Mediterráneo was at the center of the most important remodeling of the Palma coastline: the construction of the Paseo Marítimo.
It lived as a Hotel at its peak, hosting celebrities from the world of cinema and politics, until it closed at the beginning of the 70s.
Along with the Mediterranean Restaurant, the 1930 restaurant itself, where the Mercat is located, and the surrounding party rooms, were the center of Palma's nightlife.
It is said that whoever was there retained, and for that reason, the objective of the Mercat 1930 is to make this area a mandatory meeting place again.
